ISHS Acta Horticulturae 325: VI International Symposium on Flower Bulbs

MARKETING OPPORTUNITIES FOR ORNAMENTAL GEOPHYTES

Authors:   A.A. De Hertogh, T.A. Nell, M. Le Nard
Abstract:
Horticulturally, ornamental geophytes are utilized as: (1) landscape plants, (2) commercial interiorscape plants, (3) container grown plants for the home, patio, or balcony, (4) outdoor cut flowers, (5) forced cut flowers, (6) forced potted plants, and (7) growing (sprout) flowering plants. Many of them are easily grown as perennial plants and can be successfully enjoyed by consumers for years. Others, e.g., cut flowers, have limited life spans. An analysis of world flower bulb production (table 1) reveals that 6 genera (Gladiolus, Hyacinthus, Iris, Lilium, Narcissus, and Tulipa) comprise 90% of reported production acreage. As the global demand continues to increase for flower bulbs for all potential uses, it is obvious that increased marketing and production efforts are needed not only for the 6 leading genera but also for the great diversity that exists in the other several hundred genera. The essential requirements necessary to enhance marketing opportunities for ornamental geophytes are discussed.
