CHALCONES: A POSSIBLE PARAMETER TO TEST THE COLD DURATION OF TULIP (TULIPA GESNERIANA CV. APELDOORN) BULBS?

Authors:   J.M. Franssen, C.H. Kersten
Abstract:
Chalcones may be used as a parameter to test whether tulip bulbs cv. Apeldoorn have been cold-treated during 12 weeks at 5°C, if the cold-treatment has been started before 20 September (Gorin et al., 1990). To evaluate whether this parameter could be used for horticultural purposes, six stocks of bulbs cv. Apeldoorn from different parts of The Netherlands were cold-treated at 5°C during a certain period of time, starting at several data. After the (in)complete cold-treatment, with or without the addition of one week at 17°C, the bulbs were tested for chalcones in the anthers. Also, bulbs were planted and at the time of anthesis the quality of the cut tulips was determined.

A slight correlation existed between the detectability of the chalcones in the anthers after a period at 5°C followed by one week at 17°C and the quality of the cut tulips, but only if the cold-treatment had begun before 20 September. The variation between the stocks and the different bulbs, however, was large. The assay is not feasible for practical application.
