CHANGES IN FREE POLYAMINE CONTENTS IN TULIP BULBS CV.APELDOORN DURING DRY STORAGE

Authors:   C. Kollöffel, J. Geuns, H. Lambrechts
Abstract:
Tulip bulbs cv. Apeldoorn were stored at 5°C for 12 weeks to prepare shoot elongation. Levels of free polyamines were monitored in the scales, basal plate with root primordia and the shoot during this storage at 5°C (preparation phase) and 17°C.

In the scales, changes in free polyamine amounts varied with the position of the scale in the bulb. In both basal plate with root primordia and the shoot all free polyamine amounts increased.

Spermidine was the predominant polyamine in all bulb parts. Putrescine amounts in bulbs stored at 5°C were always higher than in those stored at 17°C. The reverse was found for spermine.

A direct correlation between the changes in the free polyamine amounts and the potential for shoot elongation was not found. The changes in the free polyamine contents cannot be used as indicators for the duration of the 5°C-treatment.
