| Abstract:
This study was designed to determine the effect of dry and wet storage methods at 2°C for 2 weeks on subsequent opening and longevity of four Alstroemeria cultivars cut at tight bud stage, when primary florets were about 5–6 days before opening. Dry storage in tightly sealed polyethylene bags of cvs. Ines, Juanita, Rosita and Yellow King markedly improved floret opening and vase life of inflorescences when Alstroemeria stems were treated before storage with either silver thiosulphate and sucrose (STS+S) or Chrysal AVB+SVB. Pre-treatment with STS+S had the best effect on prolongation of inflorescence longevity in cvs. Rosita and Yellow King, while in cvs. Ines and Juanita STS+S and Chrysal AVB+SVB were equally effective. The effect of wet storage method in H2O was examined on cvs. Ines, Rosita and Yellow King. Results obtained show the same differences between cultivars and applied pre-storage treatments with STS+S and Chrysal AVB+SVB in extension of inflorescence vase life. Wet storage however, had much better effect on subsequent vase life of inflorescences than dry storage conditions. | |
