ISHS Acta Horticulturae 325: VI International Symposium on Flower Bulbs

MATURITY OF THE BUDS AT THE MOMENT OF THE HARVEST IS OF CRUCIAL IMPORTANCE TO ENSURE A GOOD QUALITY OF BULB FLOWERS AT THE CUSTOMERS

Author:   A. Swart
Abstract:
A high percentage of the Dutch bulb-flower production is exported all over the world. This means that after the harvest the flowers have to survive a long post-harvest production chain from auctioning, transportation, to the final distribution to the consumer. It is tempting to harvest the flowers with buds in an immature stage of development because these buds do not show too much loss of quality at the end of the chain. The consumer, however, finds to his dismay that such bulb flowers do not produce the beautiful shape and colours that are shown on promotial posters. In this overview we report that for most bulb flowers a distinct relation exists between the maturity of the flowerbuds at the moment of the harvest and the quality of the flowers after a transport simulation.
