ISHS Acta Horticulturae 323: Symposium on Soil and Soilless Media under Protected Cultivation in Mild Winter Climates

GERMINATION AND EARLY SEEDLING GROWTH RESPONSES OF CUCUMBER TO NACL SALINITY AND CALCIUM

Authors:   A.M. Abd-Alla, R.A. Jones, A.F. Abou-Hadid
Abstract:
Seeds of cucumber (Cucumis sativa L. cv. Beta-alpha) were sown on agar (0.8%) nutrient media amended with NaCl to final treatment levels of 0, 40, 60 and 80 mM. Germination time-course data was obtained. Increasing NaCl levels delayed the onset of germination and reduced germination rates, but had little effect on final percentages. Germination performance was improved slightly at the lowest NaCl levels (0 and 40mM) with the addition of CaCl2 to the media. Increasing NaCl levels also depressed root elongation and shoot growth of the young seedlings. These results will be discussed relative to changes in other physiological parameters and their importance to crop productivity under protected cultivation.
