ISHS Acta Horticulturae 323: Symposium on Soil and Soilless Media under Protected Cultivation in Mild Winter Climates

THE EFFECT OF THE DIFFERENCE IN DAY AND NIGHT TEMPERATURES IN CONTROLLING THE GROWTH OF VEGETABLE SEEDLINGS

Authors:   A.F. Abou-Hadid, A.S. El-Beltagy, M.A. Medany
Abstract:
Tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) cv. Carmello F1, cucumber, (Cucumis sativa L.) cv. Mustang F1 and sweet pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) cv. Gedeon F1 seedlings were subjected to negative or positive differences in day and night temperatures (DIF). Growth behaviour, i.e. plant height, internode length and number, leaf number, leaf area and stem diameter were studied in each case. Cucumber plant height was reduced in the minus DIF treatment. Whereas, as cucumber the response of tomato or sweet pepper was not as clear as cucumber under the experimental conditions.
