Abstract:
Abiu, a sapotaceous fruit from the Amazon basin, grows and fruits well around Darwin and Northern Queensland.
It has an attractive bright yellow skin with a pleasant, sweet, caramel - flavoured, nutritious pulp.
The tree is of medium stature, evergreen and has no photoperiodic or dry duration for flowering.
A tree of three years old can yield 10–25 kg fruit.
The botany, agroecological requirements, agronomy and selection studies of the crop are discussed.
