EFFECT OF SUNSHINE ON GROWTH, REPRODUCTIVE CHARACTER AND SCORCHING DAMAGE OF ARECANUT PALM CV. MANGLA

Abstract:
The study on the "Effect of sunshine on growth, reproductive character and scorching damage of areca nut palm cv. Mangla" was carried out at the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur, Bangladesh during September, 1983 to April, 1989. Completely shaded palms showed significantly higher vegetative growth viz trunk height (147.15 cm), base girth (56.35 cm), number of internodes (23.00), length of internode (6.40 cm). These plants had early flowering (55%) and less scorching damage (0%) compared to those in partial shade and open sun. It revealed that hundred per cent of the palms which were non-wrapped i.e. not protected against sun were damaged due to solar radiation while the wrapped palms were free from scorching damage. The scorching damage was found in all cases on the south-west side of the palm indicating that it was caused by the afternoon sun.
