CHEMICAL THINNING OF KINNOW MANDARIN |

| Abstract:
Kinnow is very prolific bearer particularly in the early years of plant growth as compared with other mandarins cultivated in North-western planins of India. Thinning of fruits is required for better fruit quality and for longer bearing span of the plants. So an experiment was conducted to achieve this objective by the use of various chemicals: Napthalene acetic acid @ 400, 500 and 600 ppm, Ethrel @ 300, 400, 500, 600 ppm and Sevin (Carbaryl 50 WP) @ 500, 1000, 1500 and 2000 ppm. These chemicals were sprayed during the first week of April. All chemicals proved effective in thinning of the fruits as compared to the control. However, NAA @ 400 ppm was the most effective among all the other treatments. Ethrel @ 300 ppm was the second best treatment in this regard. The quality of the fruit measured in terms of TSS and acidity was also better under these treatments. No toxic effect of any chemical at any concentration was observed. | |
