TREE SIZE CONTROL IN MANGO (MANGIFERA INDICA L.) - SOME CONSIDERATIONS |

| Abstract:
In mango the indications obtained so far show that the existing polyembryonic rootstocks do not consistently influence the growth of scion in a particular pattern. Hence it appears that three approaches, namely i) breeding of dwarf scions, ii) chemical induction of dwarfing and iii) developing new polyembryonic rootstocks, hold promise. Towards achieving these goals work was initiated and it was found that higher phenolic contents and higher phloem/xylem ratio were associated with dwarfing and hence can be used as a pre-selection method. Soil drenching of paclobutrazol @ 2.5 g ai/tree during November and March every alternate year appears to be the best treatment for cv. Alphonso for obtaining size control. The chemical treatments also enhanced phenolics, led to higher phloem/xylem ratio and reduced endogenous ABA and active cytokinin levels. | |
