Abstract:
The effect of pre-treatment of stock plants with GA3, Cycocel, CEPA or Cycocel + CEPA on rooting of mango cuttings has been investigated.
Cutting taken from GA3-treated stock plants showed poor rooting even after subsequent treatment with auxins.
On the other hand, Cycocel, CEPA or Cycocel + CEPA-pre-treated cuttings showed significant increase in rooting over control.
Rooting was further enhanced when auxins were applied to the bases of pre-treated cuttings.
The effect of IBA and NAA was most pronounced.
A time-gap of 7 days between spraying and taking of cuttings gave better rooting than a gap of 3 days.
Increased rooting on cutting taken from pre-treated shoots seemed to be associated with higher levels of carbohydrates, phenols and root promoting substances.
Apart from abscisic acid, three monophenols viz. p-hydroxybenzoic acid, p-coumaric acid and ferulic acid were detected in the stem extracts of mango.
