EFFECTS OF PACLOBUTRAZOL ON AVOCADO (CV. HASS) IN MEXICO

Authors:   A. Obando, J. Alavez, N. Darby
Abstract:
Avocado (cv. Hass) grows and flowers profusely in Mexico. Yields are generally low due to poor fruit set. More than 80% of the avocado stand in Mexico are old and overgrown and require severe pruning to rehabilitate.

Foliar sprays (250–1500 ppm) generally had no significant effects on vegetative growth but induced early and more intense flowering in cv. Hass.

Paclobutrazol has the potential for increasing flowering and yields in cv. Hass, particularly during the off-season in Mexico. The growth retardant effect of paclobutrazol can also be usefully exploited to delay pruning cycle or to check re-growth form heavy pruning practised to rehabilitate overgrown trees.
