VARIETAL EVALUATION AND FLORAL BIOLOGY STUDIES IN THE GENUS PSIDIUM

Authors:   M.D. Subramanyam, M.R. Dinesh, M. Braganza
Abstract:
The genus Psidium contains one hundred and fifty species out of which P. gua java L. is the most important in view of its commercial prominance. This investigation was carried out to obtain information on growth pattern and quality aspects of different species of Psidium so that suitable species or varieties can be used in future breeding programme to obtain good plant type with better fruit quality. The vegetative growth initiation in guava was found to be cyclic occuring in two to three flushes during spring, rainy and autumn season. The flower bud development took 36 to 41 days. The TSS content ranged between 11.3 to 15.4 Brix. For selection of parents in future breeding programme, source of soft seeds, high acidity and high pectin content have been identified.
