ISHS Acta Horticulturae 321: Frontier in Tropical Fruit Research

POLLINATION AND SELECTION IN ANNONA SPECIES (CHERIMOYA, ATEMOYA AND SUGAR APPLE)

Authors:   A.P. George, R.J. Nissen, J.A. Campbell
Abstract:
Natural fruit set of the Annona spp. hybrid 'African Pride' increased linearly with increasing numbers of nitidulid beetles per flower. These beetles are capable of transferring pollen from the stamens to the stigmas in the same flower or to other flowers at the time of anther dehiscence. Rotting fruit attractants successfully increased nitidulid beetle populations in the orchard and in Annona flowers. The movement of nitidulid beetles into the flowers was shown to be adversely affected by wind and rain. Methods for increasing yield through both management techniques and selection are discussed.
