GERMPLASM COLLECTION OF CASHEW

Authors:   P. Anupunt, U. Nopkoonwong
Abstract:
An experiment on the germplasm collection of cashew in Thailand was undertaken in 1983. The seeds were introduced from various sources such as India, Kenya, Tanzania, Sri Lanka and Brazil. These seed varieties were distributed to Sisaket, Nakhon Phanom and Khon Keaw in the northeast. Yielding and phenotypical data of single trees collected from 1986 to 1990 showed that some of the selected types have superior yields and nut quality over verified varieties, Sisaket 60–1 and Sisaket 60–2 (released by Thai DOA). Type SK 34–13 has a total nut yield nearly twice that of current recommended varieties, and the others are 20–40% higher at the same age. For the nut quality, kernel size of selected types was mostly in grade 2 to super large, whole size. Clonal yield trial was planted in 1989 and top cross seed garden of cashew was also planted to establish a mean to produce composite seed in the next few years.
