Authors:   H. Hiranpradit, S. Somsri, S. Chandraparnik, V. Detpittayanan
Abstract:
Clonal selection of existing commercial cultivars of durian namely, Mon Thong, Chanee, Kan Yao, Kradum Thong and, in addition, chance-seedling trees, was conducted in Thailand, by means of the quality contest. The standard for durian quality was as a criteria for quality evaluation. Scores were weighed so as to give more emphasis on the characters in question for each cultivar. The results revealed great variation within and between cultivars. The superior clones were identified and readily available. The selected clones are being included in germplasm collection and undergone varietal trial for further assessment on genetic and environmental effects. The quality contest was an effective approach to generate growers awareness of their contribution in improvement of durian quality.
