ISHS Acta Horticulturae 320: International Symposium on Selection and Breeding of Woody Ornamentals

SELECTION AND BREEDING FOR GOOD SEED SOURCES OF TREES AND SHRUBS FOR GREENERY

Author:   P. Brander
Abstract:
Many trees and shrubs for greenery and ornamental purposes are propagated from seeds with none or little knowledge to origin of the seeds.

On this background research work has been carried out with these aspects for a period of 20 years within species such as Betula pendula and Betula pubescens.

Test of progeny clearly shows that some of the seed sources gave high quality plants, while other seed sources generally were of poor quality and with large variation between the individual plants.

In order to get a better and more uniform plant material a selection was made of individual, positive plants regarding climatic condition, health and required growing characteristics.

Crossing different clones under controlled condition and testing the progeny showed that some of the selected clones gave a satisfying result with good growing characteristics, while crosses between other clones gave a poor progeny.

On the basis of these results selected clones giving good seeds are now widely used in Danish nurseries.
