DIVERSITY OF TOLERANCE TO SOIL PH IN LEPTOSPERMUM SCOPARIUM (JR. AND G. FORST) POPULATIONS FROM NEW ZEALAND

Abstract:
Leptospermum scoparium ("manuka") is a shrub endemic to New Zealand widespread on crystalline acidic soils (pH ≤ 6). Introduced in 1987, selected maternal progenies of various latitude and altitude sources displayed on neutral to alkaline alluvial soil of southern France (pH 8.0 to 8.3) a severe chlorosis, probably due to active lime, and iron blockage. Some progenies showed an unexpected variation for alkaline soil tolerance. The clones issued by cutting of tolerant mother plants, and planted in our alkaline soil in 1989 perform well for 3 years now. The interest of pH tolerant manukas as new horticultural plants, or as parents of improved types, is discussed.
