Abstract:
In 1984–88, a project was carried out at the Department of Horticulture, University of Helsinki, funded by the Finnish Independence Fund, into 'Acquisition of hardy true-to-type parent plants, and culture of park and landscape plants in Finland'. The aim of this project was, making use of existing plantations, to obtain a stock of hardy parent plants of high-quality woody-stemmed species for landscape planting both with a view to immediate use and for breeding purposes.
For many of the genera registered, there are widely varying strains in cultivation, which differ from each other in appearance, in winterhardiness and in pest resistance.
The purpose is to carry out selection trials in order to identify those strains which are winterhardy, attractive and resistant to pests and diseases.
The strain selection trials are being carried out at five locations.
