LASTING MODIFICATION OF WOODY PLANTS SHAPE INDUCED BY THE EARLY CULTIVATION CONDITIONS

Abstract:
The more or less artificial process of nursery cultivation enables an early ascendancy over the development of woody ornamental plants. Consequently, we get a diversification of the shapes of the plants, but also the problem of their stability after production. A partial approach of vegetal development, given with the architectural schema propounded by the Botany Institute of Montpellier, enables to describe the main points and particularly to specify the reiteration potentiality for other unrolled series of differenciation sequences.

The approach of the architecture modulation by growing technics is illustrated by the experiments we led on ornamental rhododendrons as models. Under various initial growing conditions, plants with the same genotypes can become small trees or bushes. We propose an argumentation about the basis of plant development and the stability of both shapes after a several-year-growth in a greenhouse.
