RHODODENDRON BRACHYCARPUM SUBSP. TIGERSTEDTII NITZ. - A TRANSMITTER OF EXTREME FROSTHARDINESS

Abstract:
In 1935, a Rhododendron seed batch, originating from the Kongo-San mountains in eastern-central Korea, was received in Arboretum Mustila, in S-E Finland. The new material proved to be extremely hardy, but it could not be classified under any known species. In 1970, Nitzelius described and named it Rhododendron brachycarpum subsp. tigerstedtii after Dr. C.G. Tigerstedt, who introduced it to the world.

The progeny tests have shown that R. brachycarpum subsp. tigerstedtii transmitted its frost hardiness to its hybrid progenies far better than any other hardy species. The most frosthardy recombinations were obtained from crosses R. brachycarpum subsp. tigerstedtii x R. smirnowii, R. metternichii and some forms of R. catawbiense. Although R. brachycarpum subsp. tigerstedtii is a tall shrub, its progenies often inherit the growth habit of the other parent, even when the other parent is a dwarf one.
