MICROPROPAGATION OF VIRUS FREE BULBLETS OF LILIUM LONGIFLORUM BY TANK CULTURE 2. CULTIVATION CHARACTERISTIC OF PROPAGATED BULBLET

Authors:   S. TAKAHASHI, A. KATOH, T. MORIMOTO
Abstract:
We have studied the cultivation characteristics of virus free bulblets (5–7mm bulblet diameter) of trumpet lily that were propagated by our tank culture. It was found that leaves easily emerged from the tank bulblet without any cold treatment. As a part of physiological approach to this characteristic, we analyzed endogenous phytohormones of the tank bulblet. As a result, the cytokinin concentration of the tank bulblet was 4–200 fold higher than that of scale bulblet and available bulb. This result suggests that the cytokinin concentration affects the leaf emergence. It was also found from the cultivation of the tank bulblet in a plastic house that cut flowers could be harvested after 8 months cultivation, the size of the flowers bore comparison with that of available ones and no malformation and no symptom of the virus disease were observed.
