USUAL AND SPECIALTY VEGETABLE CROPS IN MEDITERRANEAN COUNTRIES

Abstract:
The characteristics of the mediterranean climate, the statistics of the production of usual vegetable grown in the field and under protected cultivation are reported. The Mediterranean countries produce 18% of the world output of vegetables. Turkey with 17.000.000 t is the leading country and is by far the largest produce of watermelon, melon, onion, cucumber, eggplant, snap bean and spinach. A list of 137 specialty vegetables, with comments on Leopoldia comosa (L.) Parl. and Orobanche crenata Forsk., is presented. The Mediterranean area is credited as center of origin or diversification of about 50 vegetables and 90% of them were already known during roman era. Considerations on the future of specialty vegetables are discussed.
