Abstract:
Two specialty vegetables, hot pepper (Capsicum frutescens, L) and shaddow benni (Eryngium foetidum) were studied in relation to technological and socio-economic constraints in order to identify solutions for improving quality.
Post-harvest constraints included poor harvesting techniques, inappropriate field containers, inefficient loading and unloading, transportation hazards, inadequate sorting and grading, lack of temperature and relative humidity control, accumulation of undesirable volatiles, absence of post-harvest treatments and poor packing materials.
Socio-economic constraints were due to poor infrastructure at producer and trader packing houses as well as airport cargo handling areas, inadequate plant quarantine procedures and multiple handling and delays.
