Abstract:
The winged bean (Psophocarpus tetragonolobus (L)DC) produces an array of economically important products including pods, seeds, tuberous roots and animal fodder.
Because of regional differences in product preference and prices, a method is needed to compare cultivars and breeding lines developed for diverse regional uses.
An equation is proposed that indexes cultivars and breeding lines on the yield (Xi's) of the various crop organs and their relative economic values (ei's). This equation is based on the selection index and defines an aggregate phenotypic worth (P ) for each breeding line or cultivar as a function of Xi and ei. For breeding purposes, an empirical equation is presented that estimàtes the economic response to selection (EYI).
