Abstract:
Specialty melons, Cucumis melo Inodorus group, have not been grown in areas of high rainfall and humidity due to a general lack of foliar disease resistance and to the deleterious effects of rainfall on fruit quality.
However, some recently released varieties of honeydew, including 'Honeymoon', 'Morning Dew', and 'Honeyshaw', show particular promise for production in humid areas.
Japanese muskmelon varieties 'Tenkei' and 'Crugar' have excellent resistance to foliar diseases and produced fruit with a soluble solids content exceeding that of any other C. melo. 'MaryGold' casaba also produces good quality fruit even under heavy rainfall.
