ESTIMATION OF STABILITY FOR FIRE BLIGHT RESISTANCE IN PEAR

Authors:   G.L. Bagnara, L. Rivalta, R. Quarta, P. Lecomte
Abstract:
The objective of this study was 1) to estimate relative average combine abilities of cultivars used as parents, and 2) to select seedlings with good and stable resistance. Results support the more general conclusions of Buiatti (1987) regarding of a physiological reaction against a pathogen. In other words, an absolute resistance of the plant does not exist, only a different speed of reaction ability. Thus, the plant reaction depends on the growth stage and the environment conditions, which have the principal influence on the phenotype performance. For this reason, in order to select for a real resistance, it is necessary to use a mathematical model to better understand the genotype-environment interaction. Anyway, it has been possible to select five seedlings with a stable resistance, corresponding to a low genotype-environment interaction.
