POSSIBILITIES OF OVERCOMING PHYSIOLOGICAL DISORDERS IN MANGO BY BREEDING |

| Abstract:
'Alphonso' is the most important mango cultivar in India in terms of local market demands as well as for export. However, this variety is highly susceptible to the malady of "Spongy tissue formation". A genetical approach made at this Institute by breeding varieties similar to 'Alphonso' resulted in the progenies segregating at the ratio of 3 : 1 for normal and spongy tissue fruits. In a cross between 'Alphonso' x 'Banganapalli', 'Hybrid 13' has been isolated which has medium fruit size and is free from spongy tissue. Studies showed that whenever 'Alphonso' is used as one of the parents, caution has to be taken to screen the hybrids for "Spongy Tissue". | |
