Abstract:
The combining ability analysis helps in proper diagnosis of the role of additive or epistatic gene action.
The existing methods of combining ability estimation are complicated and time consuming, especially in perennials like papaya (Carica papaya). An experiment was conducted to ascertain whether GCA effects could be predicted successfully through mixed pollination progenies and mean performance of the parents.
In all, fourteen characters were studied and high correlation was observed between GCA effects of diallel analysis and mean performance of the parents.
However, in the case of mixed pollen progenies, with the exception of two characters, a negative correlation was seen.
