QUANTITATIVE GENETIC ANALYSIS AND APPLICATON OF DNA FINGERPRINTING FOR IMPROVING METHODOLOGIES OF AVOCADO BREEDING |

| Abstract:
There are several potential avenues to improve fruit tree breeding in general and the avocado in particular. We describe here the results of two approaches applied to avocado. Estimation of variance components and the heritabilities of nine avocado traits are presented. The results point toward the existence of a high statistically significant component of non-additive variance in all traits. The significance of these results on selection of parent for planned crosses is discussed. The results demonstrate that the application of DNA Fingerprinting allows the identification of cultivars, races and pollen donor parents. Genetic analysis of a progeny resulting from a cross betweem 'Pinkerton' and 'Ettinger' revealed the existence of two linked bands and one band allelic to one of them. Various usages of this system for improving breeding programs are discussed. | |
