BEHAVIOUR OF SOME GENETIC CHARACTERS IN OLIVE SEEDLINGS OBTAINED BY CROSS-BREEDING

Abstract:
The first results reported here have been obtained from the vast work done on olive genetic improvement carried on in Florence since 1971. Several vegetative and fruit characteristics of the more than 5,000 seedlings obtained from 127 cross-bred combinations of 12 table and 5 oil cultivars have been observed for 11 consecutive years with the aim of recognizing the transmissibility mechanisms of the seedlings in relationship to the parent cultivars used.

Among the vegetative characteristics were: vigour, crown form in the adult phase, and leaf morphological characteristics. Among the fruit characteristics, those of most interest which have been examined include the ripening period (that is change of color of "black" olives and "green" olives).

About 150 selections have been selected as valuable for various agronomical and fruit characteristics. These were self-rooted and planted in 2 different zones of central-southern Italy for evaluation of their environmental adaptability.
