BREEDING FOR RESISTANCE TO APHIDS AND ROOT ROT IN RED RASPBERRY

Authors:   H. Daubeny, H.S. Pepin, C. Andre Levesque
Abstract:
Resistance to the aphid, Amphorophora agathonica Hottes, the vector of the raspberry mosaic virus complex (RMV), is a primary screen in the British Columbia (B.C.) red raspberry breeding program. In recent years Phytophthora - incited root rot has become a serious problem in some B.C. raspberry fields. This paper describes efforts in the breeding program to combine resistance to the aphid and to the root rot causal organism and, at the same time, develop a diverse base of resistance to both.
