HEREDITY OF MALE STERILITY IN SOME CHESTNUT CULTIVARS (CASTANEA SATIVA MILL.)

Author:   A. Soylu
Abstract:
In this study inheritance of male sterility has been studied on the seedlings obtained from controlled crosses among the native chestnut cultivars. A total of 428 seedlings have been observed during 3rd and 4th years of age when most of them produce catkins.

As the result of the study it is suggested that male sterility is governed mainly by two genes which are thought to be nearly equal in their expressions and additive. But some dominance relationships between the two genes and modifier genes must also be involved. Nonexistance of the intermediate classes in some of the crosses can be attributed to a lethal factor such as albinism.
