STUDIES ON PEELING CHARACTERISTICS OF JAPANESE CHESTNUT (CASTANEA CRENATA SIEB. ET ZUCC.), CHINESE CHESTNUT (C. MOLLISSIMA BL.) AND THEIR HYBRIDS

Abstract:
The peeling characteristics of pellicles of Japanese x Chinese chestnut hybrids was found to be influenced by the nature of the pollen parent. When hybrids were crossed with pollen from Chinese chestnut, the pellicles of the resultant hybrids (nuts) were easy to peel, whereas, when the same hybrids were crossed with pollen from Japanese chestnuts, the pellicles of the resultant fruits were more difficult to peel. However, the peeling characteristics of pellicles of the progeny was not significantly different when the strain '366–2' ('68–6' ('Houji 360' x 'Toyotamawase') x 'Hayashiamuguri'), was crossed with pollen from Chinese or Japanese chestnut.

Examination of the peeling characteristics of strains classified according to low peeling score (0≤X<0.6) indicated the presence of easy peeling strains in F1 x F1 hybrids and F1 x Chinese chestnut hybrids. Not all the progeny of Chinese chestnuts were easy to peel.

It was observed that all the progeny with easy peeling characteristics had the Chinese chestnuts, 'Houji 360' and 'Houji 480', in their pedigrees. This result provides a genetic basis for the selection of breeding parents in future crosses.
