BREEDING LOW-CHILL JAPANESE-TYPE PLUMS FOR SUBTROPICAL CLIMATES

Authors:   W.B. Sherman, B.L. Topp, P.M. Lyrene
Abstract:
Low-chill Japanese-type plum (Prunus salicina and hybrids) breeding began at the University of Florida in 1967. Over 4000 seedlings, involving 4 generations, have been produced and evaluated using polycross breeding cycles. Over 40 superior clones have been selected that have chilling reguirements of 150 to 400 chill units, combine varying levels of resistance to bacterial spot and plum leaf scald and ripen over a 2 month period. 'Gulfruby' and 'Gulfgold' are being tested in 9 countries and are grown commercially in Australia and Thailand. Fla. 87–7 and Fla. 86–2 performed well at Gaineswille in 1990.
