ISHS Acta Horticulturae 317: Fruit Breeding and Genetics

VARIABILITY OF FRUIT CHARACTERISTICS AT THE BEGINNING OF PEACH HYBRID FRUITING (1987–89, GORICA REGION)

Author:   J. Smole
Abstract:
We observed 37 seedlings (F1) from three families where mothers cultivars were 3 late ripening sister genotypes: LO-GO 216, 224, 325, and the father cultivar was the same early ripening cultivar 'Adria'. The maturity time influences fruit quality not only in each year but among years as well. The changes in the years 1987, 1988, 1989 (the beginning of fruiting) depend more on growth capacity than on genetic changes after the first bearing year. Quality of fruit, except size, was the best among early ripening genetypes in 1987 when the ripening season was the latest. Variability of fruit quality is genetically conditioned but very enviromentally influenced. From each group of maturity we got some promising genotypes: 325 x A/3, 325 x A/6, 216 x A/4, 224 x A/18, 224 x A/20, 224 x A/9, 216 x A/6, 216 x A/5, 224 x A/14, 224 x A/4, 224 x A/10, 224 x A/15.
