NEW BREEDING SELECTIONS OF LATE RIPENING YELLOW FLESH NECTARINES

Authors:   E. Bellini, E. Picardi, I. Sabbatini, G. Giannelli
Abstract:
The growing of nectarines in Italy is more and more important especially the late ripening cultivars. To face the increase need of new good varieties for the Italian and the european markets several scientific institutions for more than 20 years have carried on breeding programs and until now have introduced about 40 new cultivars.

Since 1981 the Horticultural Department of the University of Florence and the Institute for Woody Plants Propagation of the C.N.R. have set up a new breeding program with the goal of developing valid late ripening nectarines. From the numerous seedlings, 25 selections have been isolated which ripe in the months of August and September.

The more interesting selections are: "DOFI-81.312.010", "DOFI-81.312.001", "DOFI-84.352.372", "DOFI-81.316.016" and "DOFI-82.323.170" ripening in August; "DOFI-84.351.029", "DOFI-81.312.026", and "DOFI-84.350.001" ripening in September. Some of these have the "slow-ripening" character, expecially the "DOFI-84.352.372" and "DOFI-81.316.016" selections which have very attractive fruits, have optimum flavor and firm flesh.
