EVALUATION OF COLD HARDINESS OF PEACH CULTIVARS BASED ON FREEZING INJURY TO TWIGS
|
| Author: | Z. Szabò |
Abstract:
Cold hardiness of twig xylem and winter die-back of twigs of 35 peach cultivars in 1985 and 69 in 1987 were determined in Siòfok, Hungary.
The high correlation between xylem browning and die-back rate suggested that both the methods used were suitable to determine the cold hardiness of peach twigs.
These methods were also applicable to evaluate the winter injury to twigs of Japanese type plums.
Our results showed that the cold hardiness of xylem of peaches varied widely.
The most hardy cultivars are singled out and suggested for cultivation in Hungary and as parents in breeding for cold hardiness.
