PATTERNS OF HISTOLOGICAL DIFFERENTIATION INDUCED BY PACLOBUTRAZOL AND GA3 IN PEACH SHOOTS.

Authors:   R. Aguirre, A. Blanco
Abstract:
Soil applications of the growth retardant paclobutrazol and foliar sprays of the gibberellin GA3 to peach trees cv. "Sudanell-1" have resulted in opposite changes in the shoot anatomy. In trees treated with paclobutrazol, the proportion of xylem cross sectional area decreased while that of the phloem and cortex increased. Also, the density of xylem vessels increased although their lumen size was smaller than in untreated shoots. Shoots of GA3 treated trees had a greater proportion of xylem and cortex cross sectional area while the pith was smaller and the phloem remained unaffected, vessel density decreased but the size of lumen was greater than in unsprayed shoots. Greater amounts of starch deposits were observed in the pith and xylem rays of shoots from trees treated with paclobutrazol than in untreated or GA3 sprayed shoots.
