Abstract:
Eugenia Smithii Poir. (Myrtaceae) is a tropical species which can be used as house plant in temperate areas.
A lot of plants of this genus do not require high levels of light and temperature and this particular one can often replace a very well known foliage plant: Ficus benjamina L. 'Exotica' (Moraceae). Vegetative propagation of Eugenia Smithii is not easy, and seedling is commonly used as multiplication method.
This kind of propagation does not encourage the expansion of the culture, as seed production is irregular in temperate countries.
A vegetative in vitro technique of propagation has been developed and the results are compared to those of traditional cutting.
