ISHS Acta Horticulturae 314: II International Symposium on Propagation of Ornamental Plants

ACHIEVING SUCCESSFUL TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER FROM RESEARCH TO THE NURSERY

Author:   B.H. Howard
Keywords:   Funding, R & D, ornamental, trees, shrubs
Abstract:
The ornamental tree and shrub nursery industry employs both relatively simple and complex technology in the production of a diverse range of species for various markets. Within the objectives of company policy the uptake of new technology is influenced by how conveniently and cheaply it can be tested, and the extent to which capital investment is required. It is essential that new technology is properly focused and effective. To this end industry needs to communicate clearly its needs in the context of future production trends, and research needs to improve understanding of essential plant propagation processes as a sound basis for new technology and robust practical systems. A key forum for the interaction between research and industry is the R & D funding structure.
