Abstract:
The important but too often negelected influence of genetic, environmental and edaphic conditions of stock plants on the propagation and post-propagation growth of propagules neccesarily must have a physiological explanation.
In the presentation examples of these background factors and their influence on rooting and growth are examined, and suggestions as to the underlying physiological events are expounded.
We feel safe in stating that the stock plant factors are very important for the sucessfull propagation which does not end with rooting.
On the other hand rooting per se is shown to be of great influence on the post propagation growth.
The physiological events leading to this state of affairs is still not clear, but a number of promising avenues of investigation is becoming available for the propagation physiologist.
