Abstract:
Trials were carried out on the influence of low temperaure treatments, on both seeds and seedlings of Eustoma russellianum in order to reduce time period between sowing and flowering.
Presowing treatments at 3°C for 4 weeks on imbibed seeds produced an earlier germination and a higher percentage of bolted and flowered plants than untreated samples.
Seedlings from treated and untreated seeds were subsequently kept at 14°C for 3 weeks.
This treatment had a positive effect on bolting and flowering, but only in seedlings coming from seeds not vernalized.
The need of vernalization in Eustoma russellianum was thus verified.
It also demonstrated the capacity of the imbibed seeds to perceive the cold treatment.
The effect of seed vernalization did not add to the effect of low temperature treatments to the seedlings.
