Abstract:
Elemental analysis (for C, H, N and S) and ash data for kiwifruit [Actinidia deliciosa (A. Chev.) C.F. Liang et A.R. Ferguson var. deliciosa cv.
Hayward] leaves, shoots, fruit and fibrous roots were used to calculate the seasonal trends in the specific costs (g glucose g-1 dry weight) of organ synthesis (that includes the costs of carbon skeletons and growth respiration). Specific costs ranged between 1.16 and 1.26 for leaves, 1.15 and 1.35 for shoots, 1.17 and 1.27 for fruit.
The mean specific cost for fibrous roots was 1.17.
Those values were multiplied by the seasonal biomass data for a typical vine and summed to calculate the total cost of synthesis.
No accounting was made for the perennial components of the vine as their increase is negligible compared to the annual components.
The total cost of vine growth was dependent on the amount of root turn over, but in spite of that, the biosynthetic cost (kg glucose vine-1) was nearly 25% more than the weight of biomass (kg). The cost of growth respiration was approximately 17% of the cost of synthesis, again independent of the amount of root turnover.
