ISHS Acta Horticulturae 313: III International Symposium on Computer Modelling in Fruit Research and Orchard Management

MODELLING STRATEGY IN POMOLOGY: DEVELOPMENT OF THE UTAH MODELS

Authors:   J.L. Anderson, S.D. Seeley
Keywords:   Dormancy, chilling, phenology, apple, peach, cherry, bloom delay, freeze protection
Abstract:
The development and evolution of the Utah fruit tree models, the chill unit model and the flower bud phenology model, are reviewed. Our experience in phenological modelling has led us to adopt the following modelling axioms: There never is a perfect "fit" between a working model and data; good models change; and better models will be developed to reflect knowledge gained about basic fruit physiology.
