USING A PC BASED GIS FOR ADVISORY SERVICE INFORMATION |

| Abstract:
In the advisory service, data on clients are, by their nature, spatially oriented. We used data on orchards from a survey made in autumn 1991, to show how these data can be used interactively on a PC with the Geobase program which we developed. It is a GIS where informations can be stored and selectively represented on maps. The information entities, in the case presented are defined by a pair of coordinates giving the exact location of each orchard. The information on each orchard gained from the survey, such as guide lines followed, pesticide applications, equipment, diseases severity and incidence were registered into a record form defined for this purpose. Evaluation was made by selecting and displaying individual facts following logical associations or by clustering and therefore uniting information after geographical criteria. The evaluation showed for example that the number of fungicide application had no correlation with the geographic region, nor with the guide lines the farmer declared to follow. It had also no relation to the success in control of the fungal diseases. This example reveals a benefit from applying such powerful tools originated in other disciplines to solve our specific problems with spatially oriented information. | |
