Abstract:
Growers already make decisions.
They have their own decision support systems.
Why would they want to use a computer model? What are the benefits? What would the user requirements be of a successful model?
The purpose of this paper is to outline the requirements that growers have of a model before they will use it.
The intention is not to tell modellers how they should build their models but capabilities the model must have for successful adoption by growers.
The requirements are not based on research around any particular computer model; they are based on the author's experience gained through working with two computer models and a background in technology transfer.
The benefits of using a computer model will be outlined first, followed by a brief outline of factors affecting user requirements.
The user requirements of a computer model in a Decision Support System (DSS) will be discussed under three headings; Decisions, Support and System.
Implications for modellers will be drawn from previous discussions and finally recommendations made.
