ECONOMICAL HEAT SUPPLY OF GREENHOUSES EXPERIENCES FROM DENMARK

Author:   O. Maare
Abstract:
On basis of the energy crisis in 1973–74 during which the energy prices rose drastically, the gardeners at Stige (northern suburb of Odense) decided to examine the possibilities for of collective heat supply on basis of district heating from the Fynsværket. The Fynsværket is a large combined power heating station situated a few hundred metres from the gardener area at Stige.

In 1976 the gardeners founded a company with the object of negotiating with Fynsværket, authorities and gardeners concerning the realisation of of collective heat supply.

The greenhouses were to be supplied through a new pipeline which the gardening owners themselves had to build and finance as the Odense Municipality in 1977 announced that the Municipality only wanted to supply residential areas.

The company furthermore had to negotiate with plot owners in order to obtain permission to bury the pipelines in other site owners' earth.

The district heating supply for the Stige area was finished in the autumn of 1982. Soon after other gardener groups established.
