ISHS Acta Horticulturae 311: International Walnut Meeting

EXPLORATION AND EVALUATION OF SPANISH NATIVE WALNUT (J. REGIA L.) POPULATIONS FROM CATALONIA AND GALICIA.

Authors:   N. Aletà, A. Ninot
Abstract:
The first results of the exploration and evaluation of Spanish native populations of Persian walnut are presented. This work was carried out during ten years (1982 – 1991) in two well distinct regions: Catalonia (Mediterranean) and Galicia (Atlantic).

A number of 467 superior walnut trees were studied, at least during two years, and the most promising 58 clones (24 from Catalonia and 34 from Galicia) were introduced in the Mas Bové germplasm collection. These clones are being compared with commercial varieties.

The most relevant criteria for this prospection have been lateral fruit bearing and low "blight" incidence.

Some individuals from Catalonian walnut populations are very productive seedlings and they show lateral fruit bearing.

The preselected clones from Galicia showed good health during the 2 years of study in their native ecology.

Results from the first 14 clones introduced in collection are presented. In most of the clones leafing out occurs before the 10th. of April. Four of them are very precocious in producing first pistillate flowers (1st or 2nd year). Four clones have lateral fruiting higher than 50 %.
